The Medical Technology Program offers three serological tests to diagnose the infections caused by Pythium insidiosum in cats, dogs, horses, and humans. The following serological test can be requested by e-mail first (see questions) :
Immunodifussion test (ID). This is a very specific but insensitive test for pythiosis. It is recommended in cases of cat, dog, horse, and human with suspected pythiosis. Dogs and human with active pythiosis were found to react negative in ID. Price of the test = $30.00.
ELISA. This is sensitive and specific test for pythiosis in all species. Price of the test = $45.00.
Fluorescent Antibodies for tissue samples. This is a very specific and sensitive test. It detects the hyphae of P. insidiosum in the infected tissues. Price of the test = $50.00.
Culture, and identification of P. insidiosum from clinical samples is also available = $25.00.
A vaccine to cure the disease in horses and dogs is available at no cost.
