Human Lymphocyte Antigen (HLA) Testing
The tissue typing laboratory provides HLA typing for transplantation and HLA compatible platelets in support of the end stage renal, bone marrow and oncology programs in several Michigan communities that are part of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine campuses.
We provide Serologic Class I,molecular Class II -DR and -DQ HLA typing (low and high resolution), T and B cell crossmatches (AHG and Flow), and HLA antibody identification (AHG and Luminex). The laboratory is Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) certified, American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetic (ASHI) accredited, and United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) approved and licensed by the Michigan Department of Public Health.
Animal Pedigree Substantiation
We perform DNA minisatellite fingerprinting on many species, but only have a data bank for canines that allows a paternity index to be calculated. All others species are reported either as "exclusion" or a "possibility of paternity".

Research
Dr. Gerlach is a member of the Medical Technology Program faculty, College of Natural Science and also a member of the College of Human Medicine faculty. Most of the graduate students performing their dissertation or thesis research are from programs in the above colleges. Most projects revolve around transplant immunology or molecular diagnostics.
