Karen Hess graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology and a Master's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. She also completed the certificate program in Molecular Laboratory Diagnostics at Michigan State. Ms. Hess has experience in both clinical and research applications of medical technology. Her clinical background includes expertise in histocompatablity testing, analysis of tumor associated antigens, and detection of allergen specific IgE. She also has clinical experience in non-amplified DNA assays as well as PCR testing. Early research investigations focused on Factor IX Concentrates and their role as a therapeutic approach to treat classic hemophilia. Recent research projects focused on the role of adhesion molecules in hepatic ischemia reperfusion. Specifically, the involvement of L-Selectin, P-Selectin, and ICAM-1 were the molecules of interest. Ms. Hess also worked on a project investigating the role of gadolinium chloride in the inflammatory response after liver ischemia reperfusion. Techniques such as immunohistochemistry, immunogold labeling, and PCR procedures were all utilized in the above projects. The work on adhesion molecules was funded by American Heart Grants and performed while working in the Department of Surgery in the College of Human medicine at Michigan State.Ms. Hess is currently employed in the Medical Technology Program at Michigan State. She serves as academic advisor for all undergraduates in the program, as well as Clinical Coordinator for the Clinical Laboratory Science Program. |
