Overview of Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Programs
Michigan State University Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program offers online post-baccalaureate Certificate Programs in Molecular Laboratory Diagnostics, Immunodiagnostics and Clinical Flow Cytometry, Managing Biomedical Laboratory Operations, and (in development) Transfusion Service Management. These programs are designed for working medical laboratory professionals in need of updating their skills and continuing education. These programs are geared for individuals working in veterinary, forensic, industrial, and pharmaceutical laboratories that will also find this content exciting and pertinent. Completion of the related course sequences with a passing grade is required to meet the requirements of receiving the certificate of completion. The theory portion of the courses is taught online through the use of the world wide web. Courses maybe comprised of modules of reading assignments, videos, PowerPoint slide presentations, and live chatting sessions and threaded e-mail exercises. You do not need to be a computer expert but it will help if you have a basic understanding of how your computer works and how to use it to search the internet. MSU has a 24/7 help desk that will help you with your technology issues as they arise. The average student should be able to complete one module per week in about 4-6 hours. For optimal use of our system students should have a high speed internet connection.
Individuals seeking certification in molecular biology from the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) will find these courses provide solid preparation for national credentialing examinations. However, these courses are not a prerequisite or a requirement for taking the certifying exams. To determine your eligibility, contact the Agency of your choice. These courses will also be applicable to those requiring continuing education credits for relicensing or recertification. These certificate programs also provide valuable preparation for work in modern medical and biological laboratories for graduate and upper-level undergraduate students in the biological sciences.
