Admissions and Applications

Admission to the Biomedical Laboratory Operations Professional Masters Degree Program is competitive because more applications are received then this program can accommodate. Each application is reviewed by faculty and representative industrial/clinical partners. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to determine the applicant's acceptability. Scholastic record, undergraduate curriculum, practical experience, personal qualifications, personal references and career goals are the primary factors which are taken into consideration. Completion of a Bachelor of Science Degree, with a minimum GPA of 3.0, in a field of study directly related to the focus of this program is a requirement for all applicants. In addition, a minimum of two years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting are required. Applicants with certification in a clinical laboratory profession may apply their clinical education/internship experience toward the 2 year experience requirement.

Ideal Background

The best applicants will have strong course work or its equivalent in most (but not necessarily all) of the following areas.

  • Statistics
  • Biochemistry
  • Physiology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Clinical Sciences

Work experience is also an important factor used to determine admission. Applicants who have been employed in a clinical setting with significant exposure to instrumentation, automation and are familiar with the demands of working in a regulated setting will be viewed favorably.

Promising applicants with appropriate professional experience but lacking academic qualifications may be provisionally admitted. Upon successful completion of additional course work, this status may be upgraded to regular status.

Application for admission is conducted through the Office of the Registrar. Application forms and information about graduate study at MSU can be found at http://grad.msu.edu/

Applications will be accepted until the first Monday in May of the year in which you intend to start. Announcement of admission status will be made by mid June.
