Karen Hess graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology and a Master’s degree in clinical Laboratory Science. She also completed the certificate program in Molecular Laboratory Diagnostics at Michigan State University. Ms. Hess has experience in both clinical and research applications of medical technology. Her clinical background includes expertise in histocompatability testing, analysis of tumor associated antigens, and detection of allergen specific IgE. She also has clinical experience in non-amplified DNA assays as well as PCR testing. Early research investigations focused on Factor IX Concentrates and their role as a therapeutic approach to treat classic hemophilia. Recent research projects focused on the role of adhesion molecules in hepatic ischemia reperfusion.

Ms. Hess is co-undergraduate director in the Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program. She is also the academic advisor for all MT and CLS students, as well as Honors College students. Karen coordinates the clinical laboratory science program and is also involved in recruitment to the major and to the laboratory profession.

 

On Friday, April 17, 2009, Karen Hess received the 2009 College of Natural Science Outstanding Advisor Award.
