Welcome to the Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics' home page. Our program is one of the eight programs under the College of Natural Sciences at Michigan State University. The College of Natural Sciences houses 12 departments, eight programs, one center, and one biological station and is one of the largest colleges on campus. This page has been designed to help acclimate you to our program and lead you through the various aspects of our program.
To move around this website you will want to use the menus listed on the left side of this home page. Under each topic heading you'll find more useful information and probably answers to your questions. Our department offers both on campus programming and online post bachelors programs, as well as, online graduate programs.
Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program Mission Statement
The Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program at Michigan State University is dedicated to preparing clinical laboratory science leaders by providing innovative undergraduate and graduate curricula which are responsive to the needs of the profession and delivered using modern instructional practices. The Program is committed to the generation and dissemination of scholarly information thereby enhancing the education, practice, and standing of clinical laboratory science professionals thus promoting their important contribution to the health care delivery system. The Program is committed to University outreach through quality laboratory services and professional development programs. As a result, the Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program will be the pre-eminent professional resource in diagnostic laboratory science.
The Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program has been designed to assist students in the development of the following competencies:
| • | Perform analyses on clinical samples |
| • | Design, evaluate and implement new methods/protocols |
| • | Recognize a problem, identify the cause, synthesize alternatives and determine practical solutions where no preset criteria are available |
| • | Confirm and verify results through an in-depth knowledge of scientific methods, principles and instrumentation theory |
| • | Correlate and interpret data based on knowledge of pathophysiology |
| • | Establish and monitor quality assurance/improvement programs |
| • | Establish and maintain a productive and efficient work environment that promotes interpersonal relationships and a positive work attitude |
| • | Recognize the roles of clinical laboratory professionals within the health care system and how they contribute to a patient-focused health care delivery system |
| • | Effectively teach the knowledge, attitudes and skills defined as, or contained within, the clinical laboratory scientists’ body of knowledge |
| • | Communicate effectively using a variety of modes |
| • | Maintain laboratory services and staff committed to providing accurate and precise laboratory results to support quality patient care |
| • | Maintain and practice ethical standards |
| • | Determine the effectiveness of laboratory utilization |
| • | Participate in continuing professional development and effective knowledge seeking strategies |
| • | Contribute to stewardship of their profession |
In addition at the graduate level, the Program focuses on the development of scholarly activities designed to develop and/or enhance competencies related to:

| • | The development/design of scholarly proposals |
| • | Independent work, critical thinking and problem solving of skills |
| • | The dissemination of scholarly knowledge in a variety of formats |
| • | The identification of appropriate funding/revenue sources and responsible funding/revenue utilization |

| • | The development of a collaborative/collegial perspective toward education and scholarly activity |

The New Year has been a real world wide experience for Drs. Paula and Ralf Spies, a husband and wife team of dermatologists from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The Spies, who have received their MDs in 2006 from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil and later went on to get their specialization in Dermatology in 2008 from the Institute Superior of Medical Dermatology (ISDM), where they were outstanding students of Dr. Raquel Vilela. They chose to come to Michigan State University as online graduate students in the Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program based on the recommendation from Dr. Vilela. While they enjoy being dermatologists, Ralf always wanted to be a geneticist and Paula has always had a fondness for working in laboratory diagnostics, and for this reason, they chose to complete their dreams and goals by getting their Master’s degree with the online program. Since they are new to the MSU community, they wanted to get a chance to visit the campus and meet chief administrators. They will be interested in learning how to create strains of cultures and will then return to Brazil on January 21. Dr. Leonel Mendoza, Associate Professor in Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program invited them to come with Dr. Raquel Vilela, a Pharmacologist and Chemist from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Dr. Vilela is an adjunct faculty member in the Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program and Director of the ISMD along with Dr. Roberta Motta. Drs. Mendoza and Vilela have both taught a two-week summer course entitled, “Curso de Micologia Molecular,” which is taught in Spanish and Portuguese. “This is the second time that Ralf and Paula have come to MSU’s main campus,” said Dr. Mendoza. “We are so happy to have them attend our online program. It just so happened to work out that they could come to MSU during this three week period and get acquainted to East Lansing.” Dr. Vilela will be here to start work on an Epigenetics of Blastomyces project which Dr. Mendoza has gained international presence as a lead researcher. |

Spring semester begins January 11, 2010. Our online courses will be available on this date. We are ringing in the new year with several courses. We have listed courses which are offered every spring below. For a full list of our online courses, please click the "ONLINE EDUCATION" button on the menu and select "ONLINE COURSES".
